my hd has been working for 4 years with no problem except for that 1 instance. but it turns out that i wasn't the first to complain and this has happened quite often on their old power supply. this came as a surprise, 'cause that was the last thing that i would think would happen. I had the same problem with mine and just got lucky that it happened just a month shy of 2 years(that's their warranty) so when i called the tech support and told them the symptom of my HD, he immediately offered to send me a new power brick. PS - I "discovered" after receiving a new power supply from Lacie (under the warranty period) that this failure was becoming common with some models. The symptoms you describe seem similar to my problem - Maybe you should give it a try.
